LAHORE: A Lahore-based private university student, Fatima, is in critical condition after attempting suicide on Monday by jumping from the fourth floor of her campus, authorities said.
She sustained severe injuries to her spine, lungs, and legs and is currently on a ventilator, with doctors noting that the next 48 hours are crucial for her recovery. Police and hospital officials are closely monitoring her condition.
Family opposition reportedly triggered attempt
Police sources revealed that Fatima wished to marry Ahmed, a resident of her native Narang Mandi, but her family opposed the union, insisting she focus on her studies. The emotional distress from the rejected relationship is believed to have led to her suicide attempt. Fatimaโs last phone call was reportedly to Ahmed, after which she deleted his number from her phone. Ahmed has been taken into custody as police continue investigations, while statements from her family have been recorded.
University takes precautionary measures
Hospital officials confirmed that Fatima was admitted around 12:30pm and received immediate emergency care. In response to the incident, the university has closed its campus indefinitely and shifted classes online to ensure student safety. Police are also investigating whether any negligence by the university administration may have contributed to the attempt, in addition to examining the circumstances surrounding her personal life.
Authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses as the investigation unfolds, while hospital staff focus on stabilizing Fatimaโs condition. The incident has raised concerns over student mental health and the importance of addressing emotional distress among young adults in educational institutions.
