LAHORE: The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has launched a free emergency mobile phone charging service at selected locations across Lahore to strengthen public safety and emergency response, officials said on Tuesday. The initiative has been introduced under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz as part of wider efforts to improve citizen security in public spaces.
The authority said the service has been rolled out within designated safety zones across the city. These zones are equipped with multiple facilities aimed at assisting citizens during emergencies, including a panic button, the Chief Ministerโs free Wi-Fi service, emergency mobile phone charging, and other security-related support features. Officials believe the combined facilities will help residents stay connected and seek assistance when needed.
Keeping citizens connected during emergencies
A spokesperson for the Punjab Safe Cities Authority said the primary objective of the project is to ensure that people are not left disconnected in critical situations due to drained mobile phone batteries. Access to emergency charging, the official said, can play a vital role in enabling citizens to contact emergency services, family members, or law enforcement agencies without delay.
According to the authority, free emergency charging facilities will be installed at 100 locations across Lahore. So far, 30 charging ports have already been set up at various points, and citizens have started using the service. The early response, officials added, has been encouraging.
Expansion of safety zones planned
The Safe Cities Authority said it plans to further enhance the effectiveness of these safety zones in the coming weeks. Additional infrastructure, monitoring systems, and security measures are expected to be introduced to improve overall public safety across the city.
Officials stressed that the initiative reflects the provincial governmentโs commitment to using technology-driven solutions to protect citizens and make Lahore a safer urban environment.
