KARACHI: Police have registered the first case of aerial firing linked to New Year celebrations at Quaidabad police station, as incidents of celebratory gunfire surfaced across several areas of Karachi. Authorities confirmed swift action against the suspect, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb dangerous practices during festivities.
According to police officials, the Quaidabad police arrested a suspect involved in aerial firing and recovered the pistol used in the incident. SSP Malir confirmed the arrest and said timely intervention helped prevent a potential tragedy. He added that strict monitoring continues across sensitive areas to deter similar violations.
Medical experts also raised serious concerns over the dangers of aerial firing. Officials warned that stray bullets can cause severe injuries or fatalities, especially to pedestrians and children. They stressed that bullets fired into the air eventually descend with force, posing life-threatening risks in densely populated neighborhoods.
Authorities Crack Down on Celebratory Gunfire
Law enforcement agencies increased patrols across Karachi following reports of gunfire on New Yearโs Eve. Police officials said they have directed station heads to take immediate legal action against violators. Moreover, authorities urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and avoid activities that threaten public safety.
Police said registering the first case sends a clear message that zero tolerance will apply against aerial firing. Officials also appealed to the public to report such incidents so that rapid action can be taken.
Section 144 Imposed Across Karachi
Earlier, the Karachi administration imposed Section 144 for two days to prevent untoward incidents during New Year celebrations. The Commissioner of Karachi issued a notification covering both days to ensure public order.
Under Section 144, authorities have banned aerial firing, weapons display, fireworks, and double riding on motorcycles throughout the city. However, fireworks are permitted only at designated locations approved by officials. The restriction on double riding does not apply to women, children, senior citizens, journalists, and government officials on duty.
Authorities warned that violations will invite action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Officials also cautioned about possible traffic congestion on major roads and confirmed that enforcement teams remain active to maintain safety.
