Pakistan strongly denounced Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland as an independent state, calling the move a violation of international norms. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) stated that the announcement undermines Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, while threatening peace and stability across the entire region.
Islamabad Calls for Global Rejection
The MoFA urged the international community to reject Israel’s unilateral action and prevent further measures that could destabilise the region. Pakistan emphasised that such moves jeopardise ongoing efforts aimed at establishing lasting peace and security in East Africa.
Support for Somalia’s Sovereignty
Pakistan reiterated its unwavering support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The statement highlighted Islamabad’s commitment to all initiatives designed to achieve peace and stability in Somalia. Authorities stressed that international law must guide recognition of states and territorial boundaries to maintain regional security.
Israel’s Move and Its Implications
Israel became the first country to formally recognise the self-declared Republic of Somaliland, signalling its intent to cooperate in agriculture, health, technology, and economic development. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Somaliland’s president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, and invited him to Israel. He stated that the move aligns with the Abraham Accords, initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Somaliland’s leadership welcomed recognition and indicated plans to join the Abraham Accords, describing it as a step toward regional and global peace. However, Pakistan argued that the decision undermines regional stability and disregards Somali sovereignty.
Continued Support for Palestinians
Pakistan also reaffirmed its rejection of any actions aimed at the forced displacement of Palestinians. The country has historically supported the Palestinian people in their pursuit of self-determination and an independent state based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Islamabad stressed that Palestinian rights and statehood remain central to Pakistan’s foreign policy.
Commitment to International Law and Regional Stability
In its statement, Pakistan highlighted that respect for international law, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity is essential for regional peace. The government emphasised the importance of diplomatic dialogue and multilateral engagement to resolve disputes without undermining existing states.
Pakistan’s position signals a firm stance on protecting Somalia’s unity and supporting regional peace, while maintaining consistent advocacy for Palestinian sovereignty. Officials called on global powers to act responsibly and prevent unilateral recognitions that threaten regional security.
