New Zealand delivered a historic performance on day four of the third Test at Mount Maunganui. The spotlight stayed firmly on openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway. Together, they rewrote Test cricket history. Moreover, they placed the West Indies under enormous pressure with a record chase.
New Zealand declared twice in the match. They first posted 575 for 8 and later added 306 for 2. As a result, the West Indies now face a daunting 462-run target to win and level the series.
Latham and Conway Create Unmatched Opening Partnership
Tom Latham and Devon Conway produced one of the finest opening displays in Test cricket. In the first innings, they shared a massive 323-run partnership. Latham scored a fluent 137, while Conway dominated with a career-best 227.
However, the pair were not finished. In the second innings, they once again took control. Latham struck 101, and Conway followed with a composed 100. Therefore, they became the first opening pair in Test history to score centuries in both innings of a match.
Across the Test, the duo combined for 515 runs. This tally now stands as the highest aggregate ever by an opening pair in a single Test match. Their consistency, patience, and strokeplay set the tone throughout the game.
Devon Conway Joins Elite Test Batting Company
Devon Conway also achieved a rare individual milestone. By scoring a double century and a century in the same Test, he entered an elite list of batters. Only nine players had previously achieved this feat.
Conway now joins legends such as Greg Chappell, Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara, Graham Gooch, and Marnus Labuschagne. This achievement further underlines his growing stature in international cricket.
Meanwhile, Latham continued to prove his value as captain and opener. His calm leadership and technical excellence guided New Zealand during crucial phases. Consequently, New Zealand maintained complete control of the match.
West Indies Face Record Chase After New Zealand Declaration
Earlier on day four, the West Indies were bowled out for 420. Although Kavem Hodge impressed with a fighting 123, the visitors still trailed by 155 runs. New Zealand then pressed their advantage without delay.
Alongside the openers, Kane Williamson scored 40, while Rachin Ravindra added 46. Together, they pushed the total quickly. New Zealand declared at 306 for 2, leaving ample time to force a result.
As a result, the West Indies began their chase cautiously. At stumps, they reached 43 without loss. Brandon King looked fluent with 37, while John Campbell remained watchful with 2 from 50 balls.
Despite the steady start, the challenge remains enormous. A successful chase would break records. However, New Zealand remain strong favorites heading into the final day.
