Sons of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan have publicly raised serious concerns about their father’s prison conditions. They allege prolonged isolation, limited communication, and denial of court-ordered contact. Their statements have once again intensified political tensions surrounding the former prime minister’s incarceration.
Imran Khan has been in jail for more than two years. His detention remains one of Pakistan’s most divisive political issues. PTI leaders and supporters continue to clash with authorities over access to the former premier and the handling of his imprisonment.
Sons Claim Isolation and Blocked Communication
Speaking in an interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan, Imran Khan’s sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, described what they called extreme isolation. Kasim claimed that even prison guards are discouraged from speaking to his father. He said the goal appears to be total isolation to mentally break him.
The brothers said court orders allow regular communication. However, they allege these directives are not being followed consistently. Sulaiman said he last spoke to his father at the end of July. This was despite weekly calls being legally permitted.
Kasim said his most recent call with Imran Khan lasted only six minutes. He said the conversation took place nearly three months ago. Both brothers expressed frustration over the lack of contact and transparency.
Their claims were later challenged by a local journalist. Geo News reporter Shabbir Dar stated on social media that Imran Khan himself told reporters he spoke to his sons for nearly half an hour. This contradiction has added to the controversy.
Limited Visits and Claims of Harsh Conditions
The sons also addressed in-person meetings. Sulaiman said they last met their father in November 2022. The meeting followed an assassination attempt on Imran Khan’s life. He said they stayed in Pakistan for about a week at that time.
Kasim strongly rejected government claims that Imran Khan is treated like a “prince” in jail. He described the prison cell as extremely small. He claimed it measured roughly six feet by eight feet. He said the space is barely enough to stand.
Kasim also raised concerns about hygiene and food. He alleged that Imran Khan bathes with murky brown water. He said the food quality is reportedly poor. He stressed that his father is not one to complain but the conditions are far from comfortable.
Referring to a recent meeting between Imran Khan and his sister Uzma, Kasim said the former prime minister was deeply unhappy. He said the continued isolation was the main concern expressed during that meeting.
Government Rejects Allegations, Defends Jail Conditions
The government has strongly denied the accusations. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s spokesperson, Mosharraf Zaidi, rejected claims of mistreatment. He said Imran Khan is not held in a prison cell. He said the former premier lives in designated quarters.
Zaidi said Imran Khan has access to outdoor space and exercise facilities. He also said books are available and a private cook prepares meals. A medical officer reportedly monitors his diet and health.
In a statement issued to Zeteo, Zaidi called the allegations disinformation. He added that Imran Khan’s children would be treated according to the law if they visited Pakistan. However, he warned authorities would intervene if any visit became politicised or caused unrest.
Meanwhile, speculation about transferring Imran Khan to another prison has surfaced. Interior officials hinted at the possibility. Adiala Jail authorities later denied that any such proposal was under consideration.
Imran Khan remains imprisoned as legal proceedings continue. His recent conviction in the Toshakhana-2 case has added to his legal troubles. He faces dozens of cases, including corruption, anti-terrorism, and state secrets charges. Imran Khan denies all allegations. PTI insists the cases are politically motivated.
