Pakistan and Iraq have agreed to deepen cooperation and introduce stronger mechanisms to support Pakistani pilgrims traveling to Iraq. The development came after a detailed meeting between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Iraqi Interior Minister General Abdul Ameer Al-Shammari in Brussels.
Stronger Coordination for Pilgrim Management
Both ministers stressed the need for an organised system that can ensure smooth and safe travel for pilgrims. They agreed to improve coordination between their interior ministries through long-term planning and clear communication channels.
They also highlighted that streamlined procedures would help avoid delays and reduce security risks during large-scale pilgrim movements.
Security, Counterterrorism, and Anti-Trafficking Measures Strengthened
During the meeting, both sides discussed broader cooperation in security and administrative matters.
They agreed to enhance collaboration on counterterrorism, anti-human trafficking, and information sharing through a joint mechanism.
These steps aim to protect travellers and increase regional cooperation on shared challenges.
Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Pilgrim Safety
Mohsin Naqvi thanked the Iraqi government for its consistent support and hospitality toward Pakistani visitors.
He said that Pakistan places the safety and dignity of its pilgrims above all else.
He also made it clear that Pakistani pilgrims will not be allowed to overstay in Iraq and that both countries will maintain close coordination to ensure compliance.
Iraq Welcomes Pakistan’s Recent Organisational Reforms
General Al-Shammari praised Pakistan for improving the regulation of pilgrim groups. He called the recent measures effective and noted that such organised steps were taken for the first time under current arrangements.
He confirmed that all pilgrims listed by Pakistan’s interior ministry will receive entry into Iraq without obstacles.
Iraqi Interior Minister to Visit Pakistan Soon
Al-Shammari announced plans to visit Pakistan soon. During the visit, both sides will finalise a joint plan focused on enhancing pilgrim facilitation, expanding security cooperation, and strengthening bilateral ties.
