A tragic accident in Azad Jammu and Kashmir triggered a massive rescue response on Thursday after a passenger van plunged into a river near Azaad Pattan. The van, which was travelling from Hajira to Rawalpindi, reportedly skidded off the road and fell into fast-flowing waters. Authorities confirmed that several passengers are still feared missing as search efforts continue.
Four Survivors Rescued as Search Operation Intensifies
According to initial police reports, 14 passengers were on board the ill-fated van when the driver lost control on a bend. The vehicle slipped off the narrow road and crashed into the river below. Rescue teams rushed to the scene shortly after the incident and managed to save four survivors, who were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
Local police, emergency responders, and divers continued to comb the river area late into the evening. Officials said strong currents and low visibility were slowing down progress, but rescue teams remained determined to locate the remaining passengers.
Police Launch Investigation Into Cause of Crash
A Rawalpindi Police spokesman stated that efforts are being closely monitored at the highest level. City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Khalid Hamdani took swift notice of the accident and demanded a detailed report from the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Rawalpindi. He also directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations and the CTO to reach the site without delay and oversee rescue and recovery operations.
Authorities are now working to determine the exact cause of the van’s fall. Investigators said the road conditions, possible speeding, and mechanical issues will be examined thoroughly. A full inquiry report will be compiled once the rescue operation concludes and complete details are gathered.
The tragic incident has left families anxiously awaiting updates as rescue teams fight against time and harsh river conditions. Officials have urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency workers to operate without obstruction.
