The Punjab government has officially approved the celebration of the Basant festival in Lahore from February 6 to 8, 2026.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, highlighting the government’s focus on safe and organized festivities.
Strict Safety Regulations for Festival
Authorities have introduced strict safety measures to protect participants and spectators.
Motorcyclists will be required to install safety rods during the three days of the festival. This rule aims to reduce accidents caused by stray kite strings.
Furthermore, the production of kite strings will be allowed only at designated locations in Lahore.
Ban on Hazardous Materials
The government has reaffirmed a complete ban on chemical-coated and substandard kite strings. Violating these rules may result in legal action, ensuring public safety and reduced accidents.
Such measures are part of an ongoing effort to modernize Basant celebrations while retaining the traditional spirit of kite flying.
Registration of Kite Makers and Sellers
Ahead of the festival, the Home Department has begun formal registration of all kite manufacturers, sellers, and kite-flying associations in Punjab.
This step aims to regulate kite-flying activities, making the festival safer and more organized for all participants.
Officials said the registration will also help authorities monitor production quality and enforce compliance with safety regulations.
Preparation and Enforcement
Additional guidelines and enforcement measures are expected as the festival dates approach. Authorities are committed to ensuring smooth operations, reducing accidents, and maintaining public order during Basant.
The government has emphasized that while celebrating cultural traditions is important, safety remains the top priority.
