The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, approved a 5–10% increase in profit margins for petroleum companies and petrol pump dealers.
Officials indicated that this decision could push petrol and diesel prices up by up to Rs2.40 per litre.
Half of the margin increase will take effect immediately. The remaining half will depend on progress in digitisation initiatives across fuel retail networks.
Monitoring and Reporting Deadlines Set
The Petroleum Division has been tasked with submitting a progress report by June 1, 2026. Meanwhile, the Power Division was instructed to prepare a medium-term plan to gradually reduce financial support to the energy sector.
These steps aim to ensure transparency and efficiency in fuel pricing while supporting sustainable economic policies.
Vehicle Import Rule Adjustments
The ECC also approved changes to vehicle import regulations. The allowed import period for vehicles has been extended from two to three years.
Imported vehicles cannot be transferred to another owner for one year, except in cases of residential relocation or approved gift schemes. These measures aim to regulate the second-hand car market and reduce illegal transfers.
Additional Decisions by the ECC
Other key decisions include:
-
Ban on chloroform imports for general use; only pharmaceutical companies with National Regulatory Authority approval can import it.
-
Rejection of subsidised gas rates for a glass manufacturing company.
-
Approval of additional funding: Rs1.28 billion for the Pakistan Digital Authority and extra development funds for the Cabinet Division.
These steps reflect the government’s focus on fiscal discipline, industrial regulation, and digital transformation initiatives.
Impact on Consumers and Economy
The fuel price adjustments are expected to slightly increase the cost of transportation and goods, affecting daily commuters and logistics sectors.
However, authorities argue that the margin hike will help stabilise the petroleum distribution network and ensure smooth operations across the country.
