Fresh clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan have left at least five people dead after intense cross-border fire late Friday. The incident has intensified concerns as both countries struggle to manage rising tensions despite recent peace efforts.
Deadly Exchange Near Chaman and Spin Boldak
Officials from both sides confirmed that heavy fire was exchanged along the border. Afghan authorities said Pakistani forces launched attacks in Spin Boldak, which lies in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province. According to Afghan statements, the shelling killed five individuals, including one Taliban member.
However, Pakistani officials claimed that Afghan forces initiated unprovoked firing along the Chaman border. They stressed that security forces remain alert and ready to protect Pakistan’s territorial integrity.
Clashes Follow Stalled Peace Talks
The incident occurred just days after a new round of peace talks ended without progress. Although the discussions failed to produce a breakthrough, both sides agreed to continue their fragile ceasefire. These dialogues, held in Saudi Arabia, were part of ongoing regional efforts to control rising hostilities.
Earlier meetings facilitated by Qatar, Türkiye, and Saudi Arabia also sought to ease border tensions. Yet, despite repeated negotiations, stability remains uncertain.
Underlying Disputes Deepen the Crisis
The core dispute involves Pakistan’s claim that Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan militants launched attacks from Afghan soil. Recent suicide bombings involving Afghan nationals have increased Islamabad’s concerns. Meanwhile, Kabul has rejected the allegations, arguing that it cannot be blamed for violence occurring inside Pakistan.
Although both countries acknowledge the need for cooperation, distrust continues to shape their border management policies. This latest exchange shows how quickly the situation can escalate.

Dozens of people were killed in earlier clashes in October. That violence was considered the most severe incident since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Now, with fresh casualties reported, fears of another escalation are growing again.
