Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput has taken oath as the new Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court. The ceremony took place at the Governor’s House in Karachi. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori administered the oath. Several top provincial officials attended the event, which added to its importance.
The appointment came after the approval of President Asif Ali Zardari. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan had earlier nominated Justice Rajput for this key role. His selection marks an important development for the province’s judicial system.
Senior Leadership Attends the Ceremony in Karachi
The oath-taking ceremony saw strong participation from Sindh’s political and judicial leadership. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah was present. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab also attended the event.
Moreover, many judges of the Sindh High Court witnessed the ceremony. These included Justice Faisal Kamal Alam, Justice Arshad Hussain, and Justice Abdul Mubeen Lakho. Other attending judges were Justice Umar Sial, Justice Faiz Shah, Justice Khalid Hussain Shahani, and Justice Tasneem Sultana. Additionally, Justice Adnan Karim Memon, Justice Sana Akram Minhas, Justice Abdul Rehman, and Justice Ali Haider joined the gathering.
Their combined presence highlighted the significance of the new appointment. It also reflected the unity of the judicial community during a major transition.
JCP Endorses Key Appointments Under New Constitutional Framework
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan recommended Justice Rajput’s elevation during its first meeting held after the 27th Constitutional Amendment. The amendment also introduced the Federal Constitutional Court. Therefore, this meeting carried special importance.
During this session, the JCP also supported the appointment of Justice Muhammad Kamran Khan Mulakhail as the permanent Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court. Furthermore, the Commission backed the elevation of Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb as a permanent judge of the Supreme Court. This recommendation received approval by a majority vote.
These decisions signaled a new phase for the judiciary, especially under the revised constitutional structure.
Justice Rajput’s Legal Journey and Professional Growth
Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput was born on October 16, 1965. He completed his LLB from Government Jinnah Law College in Hyderabad. He later earned his Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Sindh.
His legal career began when he enrolled as an advocate with the Sindh Bar Council in 1990. He secured his High Court advocacy license in 2001. He practiced law for three years before joining the judiciary. In 1993, he was selected as a Judicial Magistrate. He rose to the rank of Senior Civil Judge and Assistant Sessions Judge in 2000.
Justice Rajput was elevated to the Sindh High Court on August 31, 2013. Since then, he has served at multiple locations. These include the Principal Seat in Karachi, the Sukkur Bench, and the Circuit Courts in Hyderabad and Larkana. Over 12,000 case disposals stand to his credit, which highlights his efficiency.
He also took charge as the acting Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court on September 15, 2025. His new role as the permanent Chief Justice further strengthens his long judicial career.
