ISLAMABAD: The KP government appears on a collision course with the hybrid system in Islamabad over May 9 violence cases. The KP cabinet decided to abolish the May 9 and 10 cases due to insufficient evidence. Officials stated that the cases appeared politically motivated and lacked credible investigative support.
The cabinet also decided to revisit the Radio Pakistan Peshawar inquiry for deeper review. Leaders agreed to send the matter to a Special Committee of the Provincial Assembly. Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi addressed the meeting through a video link.
Background of the May 9 Unrest
Nationwide protests erupted after authorities arrested Imran Khan in 2023. Crowds attacked military and state buildings during widespread political turbulence. The Jinnah House attack became the most prominent incident from that unrest.
The violence created serious legal challenges for PTI’s senior leadership. Many top leaders, including Imran Khan, still face several related cases.
Chief Minister’s Criticism and Human Rights Concerns
The chief minister condemned the recent remarks by federal ministers. He argued that their behaviour aimed to trigger public anger intentionally.
He labelled their statements unconstitutional and harmful to national stability. He criticised the treatment of Imran Khan and his wife in custody. He stressed that both faced unjust solitary confinement and moral mistreatment.
Governance, Transparency, and Technology Reforms
Afridi issued strict directives to improve transparency across provincial institutions.
He emphasised rapid digitalisation to increase efficiency and reduce manual delays.
He instructed departments to participate in meetings through online platforms.
He said this approach would cut costs and save significant administrative time.
He ordered that all new government recruitment must go through ETEA.
He banned any hiring through private testing services to ensure merit.
Financial and Administrative Concerns
The chief minister highlighted KP’s stance at the recent NFC meeting. He stressed that the province presented its case for overdue funds forcefully.
He reiterated that KP’s merged districts still await their rightful share. He said the withheld Rs1,375 billion caused serious administrative strain.
Border Closure and Security Measures
Afridi expressed concern about the prolonged closure of the Torkham border. He said the disruption harmed truck drivers and affected families severely.
He ordered the Khyber administration to provide food and shelter immediately. He directed officials to secure bulletproof vehicles for district officers on priority. He instructed them to remove all procurement obstacles without delay.
