A major gas pipeline burst in Peshawarโs Matni area on Thursday, disrupting the supply of gas to Peshawar, Swat and Mardan, and creating a temporary energy shortage across several districts. Officials said the rupture occurred in a 24-inch diameter pipeline that transports gas from the southern districts toward Peshawar, resulting in an immediate decline in pressure and availability.
Emergency response teams from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) were dispatched to the site soon after the incident, where they began repair operations to contain the damage and restore the flow. Authorities noted that the pipeline had suffered substantial structural harm, requiring extensive work to restore full functionality and prevent prolonged disruption.
To minimize public impact, the administration has rerouted domestic supply through alternative sources. A 16-inch pipeline originating near the Indus River and running toward Nowshera is currently stabilizing the system, allowing partial gas distribution to households.
However, the limited capacity has forced authorities to introduce a temporary rationing schedule under which domestic consumers will receive gas for only four hours a day, during morning, afternoon, and evening intervals.
In response to the reduced pressure, the Peshawar commissioner ordered all CNG stations across Peshawar, Mardan and Swat divisions to remain closed until further notice. The decision aims to prioritize household consumption and prevent further strain on the system during the ongoing shortage.
Officials said repair crews are working around the clock to reconnect the damaged section and fully restore normal pressure. However, they also cautioned that the timeline depends on the extent of the structural repairs needed.
Residents in the affected regions have been urged to use gas sparingly and adhere to the temporary schedule to ensure equitable distribution until the restoration process is complete.
