The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a modern digital system to simplify and speed up the registration of births and deaths across Pakistan. The initiative aims to make the process faster, more transparent, and accessible to all citizens through real-time integration with hospitals and health centers.
A Step Toward E-Governance and Efficiency
This digital reform follows directives from the Federal Ministry of Interior and aligns with the governmentโs broader goal of improving registration services nationwide. It is part of the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework, which was approved by the Prime Minister earlier this year. The framework seeks to establish a unified and technology-based mechanism for recording vital life events, eliminating delays and manual errors.
Installation in Over 50 Hospitals Nationwide
Under a pilot project, NADRA has successfully installed automated registration systems in more than 50 hospitals and healthcare centers across the country. Major facilities such as PIMS, CDA Hospital, and FG Hospital in Islamabad, along with Lady Aitchison Hospital in Lahore, are already connected to this system. The project also includes hospitals in Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Real-Time Notifications and Mobile App Integration
Through this initiative, hospitals and health centers are now directly linked with NADRAโs central database. When a birth or death occurs, the system instantly sends a notification via SMS and the NADRA mobile application to parents or heirs. These alerts guide families on how to complete the official registration process at their nearest Union Council.
This integration ensures real-time reporting of vital events, making the entire process more reliable and accessible. As of now, NADRA has recorded 4,000 birth and 407 death notifications through this new mechanism, reflecting early success.
Expanding to All Provinces
Initially launched in three districts of Punjab, the facility will soon be extended across the entire province. Preparations are also underway to expand the system to additional hospitals and health centers throughout Pakistan. Once provincial governments finalize arrangements, citizens will be able to complete direct registrations through Union Councils, ensuring full integration between NADRA, healthcare institutions, and local government offices.
Promoting Transparency and Reducing Delays
NADRAโs digital transformation is a major milestone toward improving Pakistanโs national identification and population record system. The initiative reduces processing delays, prevents data manipulation, and enhances coordination between institutions. By using modern technology, NADRA aims to ensure that every vital life event is recorded accurately and securely.
This step marks a significant move toward e-governance, strengthening Pakistanโs digital infrastructure and improving citizensโ access to essential public services.
