Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced the resumption of nonstop passenger flights from Islamabad to Manchester, beginning October 25, 2025. This marks a major milestone in reconnecting Pakistan with the United Kingdom after years of suspension due to aviation safety concerns.
According to the airline, the direct flights will “bring loved ones closer once again” by providing a vital travel link for millions of Pakistanis residing in the UK. Following the launch of the Islamabad–Manchester route, PIA plans to expand its operations to Birmingham and London in the subsequent phase.
Regulatory Approvals and Clearances
The revival of PIA’s UK operations follows the issuance of the Foreign Aircraft Operating Permit (FOP) by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. This approval was the final requirement for the airline to restart commercial passenger services.
In addition, the UK Department for Transport granted PIA permanent approval to operate cargo flights from Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore to Britain. These designations, under the UK’s ACC3 aviation security framework, will remain valid until August 2030.
The airline had already secured the Third Country Operator (TCO) certification earlier, further strengthening its compliance with international aviation standards.
Background of the Suspension
PIA flights to the UK and European Union were banned in July 2020 after the “pilot license scandal” raised serious safety concerns. Following the incident, Pakistan was placed on the UK’s Air Safety List in 2021, preventing local carriers from operating passenger flights.
Since then, Pakistani and British regulators have worked in close coordination to address safety deficiencies and improve oversight mechanisms. The collaborative effort led to a positive breakthrough in July 2025, when the UK Air Safety Committee removed Pakistan from its Air Safety List.
The decision followed rigorous evaluations of the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority’s safety standards and sustained technical cooperation between the two sides.
Gradual Restoration of European Routes
PIA’s resumption of UK-bound flights is part of a broader restoration of its European operations. The European Union lifted its ban in 2024, enabling Pakistani carriers to resume flights to EU destinations.
In January 2025, PIA successfully operated its first direct flight from Islamabad to Paris, marking the beginning of its phased return to Europe. The new Manchester service represents another step forward in the airline’s recovery and international expansion.
A Relief for the Pakistani Diaspora in the UK
The restoration of flights is seen as a significant relief for the more than 1.7 million Pakistanis living in the United Kingdom. Direct air connectivity not only facilitates family visits but also strengthens business, cultural, and educational exchanges between the two countries.
By gradually expanding its UK operations, PIA aims to regain the confidence of international passengers while reinforcing its role as a bridge between Pakistan and Europe.
