ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has enforced strict speed limits for electric bus drivers in Islamabad. Drivers must follow 40 kilometers per hour in sector areas and 45 kilometers per hour on highways.
Advisory follows non-fatal accidents on routes
Officials issued the advisory after at least three non-fatal accidents occurred on different city routes. Authorities stated that overspeeding contributed to these incidents, raising concerns about passenger safety. Consequently, CDA directed the drivers to exercise strict caution while operating the new fleet.
Silent buses require cautious handling
CDA’s planning wing highlighted that electric buses operate almost silently, making them less noticeable to pedestrians and motorists. Therefore, drivers must remain highly vigilant to avoid potential mishaps. Furthermore, officials urged operators to understand the unique handling requirements of the new vehicles.
Current operations and fleet details
The National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) operates the electric buses across Islamabad. The company procured 170 buses last year under the sustainable transport project. At present, 120 buses are running on nearly 20 routes due to limited charging facilities.
Full fleet expected soon
Officials revealed that the remaining buses will join the fleet after depot upgrades are completed. Engineers are installing new charging panels to boost operational capacity. As a result, all 170 buses should begin service later this month.
Passenger usage continues to increase
CDA estimated that 60,000 passengers currently travel daily on electric buses. However, once the complete fleet operates, passenger numbers could reach 100,000. This rise will mark a major expansion of eco-friendly public transport in the capital.
CDA focuses on safety and sustainability
Through these steps, CDA aims to promote safe, reliable, and environmentally friendly travel. The combination of speed limits and expanded operations highlights the authority’s commitment to passenger protection and sustainable urban mobility.
