Saudi Arabia has introduced a set of new penalties targeting the food sector, aimed at reinforcing stricter health and safety standards across the industry. The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing has issued regulations that impose fines ranging from SR500 to SR5,000 for a variety of violations, with the goal of enhancing food hygiene, consumer safety, and overall trust in food establishments.
One of the key measures includes penalties for smoking within food outlets. Individuals caught smoking in unauthorized areas will face the highest fine of SR5,000. This step is part of a broader effort to curb unhygienic practices and maintain a safe environment for both consumers and food workers.
The ministry stressed that smoking in areas where food is prepared, served, or handled not only violates safety standards but also poses a significant public health risk.
In addition to smoking, the new regulations address compliance with personal hygiene requirements for food workers. Employees who fail to wear face masks or neglect to properly cover their heads while in preparation areas will be fined SR1,000 each.
This ensures that food handling maintains a high standard of cleanliness, preventing contamination and safeguarding the health of consumers. Delivery workers are also expected to follow strict guidelines, including wearing their official company uniforms; failure to comply will result in a SR500 penalty.
Other violations outlined in the regulations target deceptive practices and unhygienic behavior. For instance, serving frozen juices as freshly prepared is subject to a fine of SR1,000.
Additionally, behaviors such as touching the face, spitting, or other unhygienic actions in food handling areas are punishable by fines of up to SR2,000. These measures are designed to ensure that all food sold or served meets appropriate safety standards and that consumers can trust the quality of the products they purchase.
The Ministry emphasized that these initiatives are part of a broader campaign to safeguard public health, increase transparency within the food supply chain, and enhance consumer confidence.
Food outlets, restaurants, and delivery services are strongly urged to comply fully with the regulations to avoid penalties. By enforcing these rules, Saudi authorities aim to create a safer, cleaner, and more reliable food sector, protecting both the public and the integrity of businesses operating in the country.
