An operation against militants in the Bajaur and Khyber districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been ordered following the failure of negotiations between a tribal elders’ jirga and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as Fitna Al Khawarij, sources said on Tuesday.
Officials confirmed that more or less roughly 800 militants are currently present in the area, with the jirga’s key demand — for the militants to vacate the region — flatly rejected by the TTP.
According to official estimates, around 300 fighters are positioned in two areas of Mamond tehsil in Bajaur, while over 350 are active in Khyber. More than 80 percent of these militants are Afghan nationals.
Mamond, home to over 300,000 residents, has already seen significant displacement, with more than 40,000 people fleeing their homes to avoid potential clashes.
Malakand Division Commissioner Abid Wazir said that arrangements for the displaced have been finalized. Shelter is being provided in 107 government buildings in Khar, and a tent village is being set up at the Khar Sports Complex, complete with basic facilities for affected families.
Several families have relocated to safer areas ahead of the operation, while others are being moved to government-run camps as security forces prepare to advance.
