The opposition has intensified pressure on the government, calling for the creation of a judicial commission to investigate the recent sugar scandal, which they allege involves large-scale corruption and misuse of national resources.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser demanded an independent, transparent inquiry into what he described as โserious financial misconductโ within the sugar sector. He urged swift action against all individualsโwhether bureaucrats or private actorsโwho had allegedly plundered public funds and inflicted losses on the national treasury.
โThe corruption is significant, and accountability must be across the board,โ Qaiser asserted. He criticised the government for, in his view, failing to uphold the principles of justice, particularly in cases involving opposition leaders. According to him, the sentences handed to opposition figures were politically motivated, raising questions about the governmentโs true intentions for the countryโs future.
Qaiser further claimed that not only were opposition leaders being sidelined, but other members of the National Assembly were also facing political pressure and threats. He highlighted the case of Omar Ayub, noting that the court had granted Ayub a stay order, reaffirming him as the legitimate Leader of the Opposition.
โThe oppositionโs struggle cannot be crushed,โ Qaiser vowed, emphasising that his party would not back down despite mounting challenges.
Reiterating his core demand, the PTI leader called for a fully independent judicial commission to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the sugar scandal. He argued that only a transparent probe could restore public trust and ensure those responsible for draining the countryโs resources are brought to justice.
The government has yet to formally respond to the demand for a commission, but the controversy threatens to further inflame political tensions in Islamabad.
