Speaking to reporters in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Trump said, “If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.” The endorsement comes as the 27-year-old Euphoria and White Lotus star faces mounting criticism over the campaign’s messaging, which blends themes of genetics and fashion.
One of the ad’s controversial taglines reads, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” playing on the double meaning of “jeans” and “genes.” In a promotional video, Sweeney remarks, “My jeans are blue,” following a segment that touches on inherited traits in a tongue-in-cheek scientific tone.
Public records confirm that Sweeney registered with the Republican Party of Florida in June 2024. Her political affiliation came to light as online backlash against the campaign escalated, with critics accusing it of subtly promoting harmful ideals about race, genetics, and beauty standards.
Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, dismissed the controversy, calling it “cancel culture run amok.” Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, saying, “My political advice to the Democrats is: continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive that they’re a Nazi.”
While American Eagle has stood by the campaign, defending its creative direction, Sweeney has yet to respond publicly to the criticism.
