CM Maryam Nawaz introduces Pakistan’s first dust suspension system in Lahore
In a significant move to tackle the worsening air quality in Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday unveiled Pakistan’s first “world-tested” dust suspension system, aimed specifically at combating smog. The innovative technology, which includes 15 advanced Anti Smog Guns, has been delivered to Lahore and will soon be operational across key pollution hotspots.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CM Maryam shared details of the initiative, emphasizing that these fog cannons spray ultra-fine water mist capable of capturing and settling dangerous airborne pollutants, including PM2.5 and PM10 particles, which are major contributors to respiratory illnesses and poor visibility during smog season.
“These advanced fog cannons spray ultra-fine water mist to capture harmful airborne particles… forcing them to settle and clean the air,” Maryam wrote.
Integrated with real-time tech
The Anti Smog Guns will not operate in isolation. Instead, they are being fully integrated with Punjab’s real-time air quality monitoring network and the Environment Protection Force. According to the Chief Minister, the system can be automatically activated in areas where pollution spikes are detected.
This is made possible through a sophisticated network powered by satellite imagery, drone surveillance, QR-coded brick kilns, and AI-based pollution tracking tools. The aim is to target pollution at its source and deploy resources swiftly for maximum impact.
CM Maryam Nawaz hailed the development as a “major leap forward” in Punjab’s fight against smog. She also called for public cooperation, stating:
“With resolve, technology, innovation, and citizens’ participation, we will together, Insha’Allah, win the fight against smog.”
The deployment of these systems is part of a broader climate and environmental policy being shaped under Maryam Nawaz’s leadership, which also includes digitizing emissions data and improving industrial compliance.
