In a major move to combat traffic congestion and protect pedestrian rights, authorities in Islamabad have initiated a large-scale crackdown on illegal parking, resulting in fines for over 56,000 drivers since the beginning of this year.
The campaign is being conducted under the directive of the cityโs Inspector General of Police, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi. The goal is to improve traffic flow across the capital and ensure that footpaths and public walkways remain accessible for pedestrians.
Special enforcement teams have been mobilized across key commercial areas and high-traffic zones. These teams are monitoring locations that have been clearly designated as โNo Parkingโ zones. In addition to issuing fines, authorities have also impounded vehicles that were found parked outside marked parking areas or obstructing pedestrian paths.
The Chief Traffic Officer, Captain (R) Syed Zeeshan Haider, has directed all zonal Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) to strengthen enforcement efforts and ensure full implementation of the rules. He emphasized that strict adherence to parking regulations is essential to avoid unnecessary traffic buildup and protect public spaces.
โPedestrian walkways are not meant for vehicle parking. We are committed to keeping sidewalks clear and will take action against violators,โ he said in a statement. He reiterated that no exceptions will be made for those who block pedestrian access by parking in prohibited areas.
The operation has been particularly active in zones with high pedestrian traffic, including commercial markets, hospitals, and educational institutions, where illegal parking has become a common issue. Officers are not only fining violators but also conducting awareness drives to educate the public about the importance of using designated parking spaces.
Citizens have been urged to cooperate with authorities and follow traffic rules to help create a safer and more efficient traffic system. The campaign is part of broader efforts to enhance the livability of Islamabad and prevent public inconvenience caused by traffic mismanagement.
The traffic police have also launched public awareness messages encouraging people to use official parking zones and avoid areas marked for pedestrians. Officials warn that repeated violations may lead to harsher penalties, including impounding of vehicles or legal action.
This initiative highlights a renewed focus on improving urban mobility and pedestrian safety in the capital city, with traffic authorities showing zero tolerance toward habitual offenders.
