Dozens of QAU Students Arrested
ISLAMABAD: Islamabad police arrested dozens of students from Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) on Tuesday during an early morning raid on several hostels, acting on the university administration’s complaint.
According to officials, hostels 6, 8, 9, and 11 were forcibly vacated, and around 55 to 60 students were taken into custody and moved to the Secretariat Police Station.
The QAU administration stated that students had been directed to vacate the hostels by July 13 to allow maintenance work during the summer break. While most students complied, some reportedly continued to stay despite repeated warnings and multiple extended deadlines.
Islamabad police said their action was taken “in accordance with the law and at the written request of the university administration.” They added that students who resisted the eviction were removed, and further legal action will follow as per the administration’s request.
The university had earlier evacuated 11 hostels, but reported that four buildings remained occupied illegally.
Prominent human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir claimed the total number of detained students was 72. Speaking outside the police station, she said, “We are meeting with the vice chancellor to try and resolve the situation.”
Meanwhile, student protests erupted on campus, leading to the closure of the Vice Chancellor’s Office.
“The VC Secretariat has been sealed due to the ongoing protest,” the administration confirmed.
