Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced on Tuesday the immediate removal of Inspector General of Prisons Qazi Nazir, following a major security breach at Malir Jail. Additionally, DIG Jails Hassan Sehto and Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah have been suspended amid public outrage over what is being described as one of the most serious jailbreaks in the province’s history.
A government notification confirmed the appointment of Muhammad Aslam Malik as the new DIG Jails.
Speaking to reporters, Memon described the incident as a major embarrassment for the Sindh government and emphasized that the issue is being addressed at the highest levels of authority.
“The IG Prisons has been removed with immediate effect, and negligent officers have been suspended,” Memon stated. “This cannot be ignored. If the escaped inmates are not apprehended within 24 hours, cases will be registered under anti-terrorism laws.”
He assured that those responsible for the jailbreak will be brought to justice and revealed that an internal probe has been launched to uncover the full details and identify further security failures.
Memon clarified that the incident did not appear to be an act of terrorism. Instead, it was attributed to severe mismanagement, confusion triggered by a recent earthquake, and a breakdown of prison security protocols.
“This was not a coordinated terror strike, but it has exposed serious flaws in the administration and emergency response systems of our correctional facilities,” he added.
