Arshad Nadeem
Pakistanโs javelin sensation Arshad Nadeem once again brought glory to the nation by clinching the gold medal at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships 2025, held in Bangkok.
In a thrilling final on May 31, Nadeem secured victory with a commanding throw of 86.40 metres on his final attempt, reaffirming his dominance in the sport and further cementing his place as one of the world’s leading javelin throwers.
Despite falling just short of the championship record of 86.72 metres, Nadeem’s performance was a display of consistency, power, and determination. His victory marks a historic milestone for Pakistan, ending a 50-year gold medal drought at the Asian Athletics Championships.
The last time Pakistan secured a gold in the event was back in 1973, when Allah Dada and Muhammad Younis won gold in javelin throw and the 800 metres, respectively.
The final was closely contested. Indiaโs Sachin Yadav took the silver medal with a best effort of 85.16 metres, while Japanโs Yuta Sakiyama claimed bronze with a throw of 83.75 metres. From the start, Arshad showcased his form with an opening throw of 75.64 metres, followed by steady improvementsโ76.60 metres in his second attempt and a massive 85.57 metres in his third. This throw catapulted him to the top of the standings and set the tone for the rest of the competition.
Meanwhile, fellow Pakistani athlete Yasir Sultan showed promise as well, starting with a 70.53-metre throw and improving to 75.39 metres in his second attempt. However, he couldnโt keep up the momentum, finishing outside the medal positions.
Back in Pakistan, Arshadโs victory sparked jubilant celebrations across the country, particularly in his hometown, Mian Channu. Streets echoed with cheers, drums, and national songs as his family and fans rejoiced. At the stadium, Nadeem offered a sajda (prostration) in gratitude, while the crowd erupted into chants of โDil Dil Pakistan.โ
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended their heartfelt congratulations, praising Nadeem for his resilience and achievements. Nadeem had already made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by becoming Pakistanโs first-ever individual Olympic gold medalist, thanks to his record-breaking 92.97-metre throw.
With this latest triumph, Arshad Nadeem adds to his growing medal tally, which now includes four golds, one silver, and four bronze medals across major international eventsโincluding the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Islamic Solidarity Games.
His journey continues to inspire a new generation of athletes in Pakistan and serves as a powerful reminder of what perseverance, faith, and hard work can achieve on the world stage.
