July 1, 2021, was the 8th day of Pakistani mountaineer Samina Baig’s expedition at K2’s peak along with her team members. Samina, known as the first Pakistani female mountaineer to summit Mount Everest, is now determined to wave the green flag on the 8,611-metre high K2.
Samina also carries honour of scaling the seven highest peaks in the world, known as the Seven Summits. The six-member expedition team has been sponsored by the Special Communication Organization, which is supervising the campaign titled ‘SCO K2 Dream’.
In 2015, the mountaineer was forced to call off her bid to summit the mountain after suffering an injury while climbing. Sanina had been climbing K-2 on a second rotation to acclimatise to conditions at high altitudes ahead of a summit attempt. The group, however, managed to get back to base camp for doctors to have a better look at the injuries and to treat the arm.
The SCO has embarked on a mission to promote non-traditional campaigns in Pakistan. The measure is bound to encourage the youth towards mountaineering and scaling the peaks. It will also help bring more confidence to the local mountaineers. The step would also promote tourism in Pakistan and attract more foreigners from abroad.
The SCO recently installed the world’s highest tower in commemoration of the late Pakistani mountaineer Ali Sadpara. The installation allowed for better mobile phone and internet coverage in the region.
