Commissioner Karachi Bans Rickshaws on 11 Major Roads to Ease Traffic

In a move aimed at improving traffic flow and public safety, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has imposed a complete ban on unauthorized rickshaws operating on 11 key roads across the city. The restriction, effective from April 15 to June 14, 2025, targets unregistered 1+2 and 1+4 motor cab rickshaws.

The decision comes after a recommendation from the Karachi Traffic Police, who identified these rickshaws as a major source of congestion and road accidents in busy areas. The ban has been enforced under Section 144 of the CrPC, and violators will face legal action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The roads where rickshaw movement is now prohibited include:

  • Shahrah-e-Faisal
  • I.I. Chundrigar Road
  • Shaheed-e-Millat Road
  • Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar Road
  • Stadium Road
  • Among several other high-traffic routes

Station House Officers (SHOs) have been instructed to ensure strict enforcement, while traffic police have been given full authority to handle complaints and take immediate action against violators.

Commissioner Naqvi emphasized that this temporary measure is part of a broader plan to streamline urban mobility and reduce traffic-related risks. Rickshaw drivers have been advised to shift to alternative routes during the restriction period.
