NADRA Clarifies Role in Birth, Death, and Marriage Records Amid Viral Video Controversy

ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued a public clarification regarding its role in birth, death, and marriage registrations, following a viral video that raised questions about its procedures.

In a statement, NADRA emphasized that the registration of births, deaths, and changes in marital status is conducted under provincial laws by the relevant Union Councils. Based on these entries, NADRA then issues identity documents in accordance with federal regulations.

The clarification came after a social media video showed an individual expressing shock at being declared deceased during a visit to a NADRA office. NADRA explained that the individual’s death had been registered by a close relative at the concerned Union Council.

Reiterating its position, NADRA stated that Union Councils bear the responsibility for recording vital life events, and NADRA’s role is to update identity documents based on that official information.

The authority also revealed that over 7 million death records have been registered at Union Councils nationwide. However, many family members have yet to notify NADRA or cancel the identity cards of deceased relatives.

To address this issue, NADRA has sent text notifications to the mobile numbers of individuals or their next of kin, urging them to visit the nearest NADRA office to cancel the identity card if the death information is accurate. If the death record is incorrect, they are advised to contact their local Union Council to correct the error.
