China Launches Its First Amphibious Assault Ship

China has launched its first amphibious assault ship, marking a significant advancement in its naval power.

The Type 076 dual-use assault ship, named Sichuan after a southwestern province, was unveiled at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai on December 28.

With a full-load displacement of over 40,000 tons, the Sichuan is equipped with an electromagnetic catapult and features a dual-island superstructure. It boasts a full-length flight deck, enabling it to carry a wide range of military assets, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and amphibious vehicles.

According to state media outlet Xinhua, the design of the Sichuan enhances its operational capabilities, particularly for conducting aircraft operations and amphibious missions.

The launch of the Sichuan follows the recent introduction of China’s first icebreaker, Tan Suo San Hao, which will support scientific and archaeological research, further bolstering China’s deep-sea exploration efforts. These developments are part of China’s ongoing initiative to modernize its military.

In addition, reports indicate that China has completed its first sixth-generation stealth fighter jet, which was recently seen flying over Chengdu, marking a major leap forward in the country’s aerial combat capabilities.
