Bangladesh’s anti-corruption commission has initiated an investigation into allegations of a $5 billion embezzlement linked to the Russian-funded Rooppur nuclear power plant, the country’s first nuclear project. The inquiry targets former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and niece Tulip Siddiq, a British lawmaker and minister.
The allegations stem from a writ filed in the high court by Bobby Hajjaj, chairman of the Nationalist Democratic Movement party and a political rival of Hasina. Hajjaj called for accountability through legal proceedings.
The $12.65 billion Rooppur project, funded 90% by a Russian loan, is under scrutiny for alleged mismanagement, kickbacks, and money laundering tied to procurement processes. The anti-corruption commission stated that these claims highlight concerns over misuse of public funds and potential abuse of power.
The investigation also includes accusations of theft from a government housing scheme for the homeless.
Hasina, 77, fled to India on August 5 following her ouster in a revolution, leaving many Bangladeshis demanding she face trial for alleged mass murders. Attempts to contact her for comment were unsuccessful.
Her niece, Siddiq, has denied any involvement in the accusations, as stated by the British Prime Minister’s office. Joy, reportedly residing in the United States, was also unavailable for comment.
