Government and PTI Set for Talks During NA’s In-Camera Meeting on Monday

In-Camera Meeting

The ruling coalition and the opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), are set to engage in formal talks on Monday during an in-camera meeting at the National Assembly.

This meeting, scheduled for 11:30 AM in committee room number 5 of the Parliament House, marks the first time the two sides will convene to discuss pressing issues since the February 8 elections.

According to a notification, the session will be presided over by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. Notices have been issued to members of both the government and opposition committees to ensure participation.

The discussions aim to address a range of issues, reflecting a significant step toward dialogue in the current political climate.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, following a recommendation by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, established a government negotiation committee.

The committee was formed in response to a request by PTI Chairman Gohar, who expressed an interest in initiating talks.

Speaking on the importance of these discussions, Speaker Sadiq emphasized the critical need for negotiations to serve the broader interests of the nation. “National unity is crucial to addressing the challenges facing the country,” he stated.

He further noted that dialogue and mutual understanding are essential for achieving effective and sustainable solutions to political disputes.

The talks follow a call for discussions from PTI amid rising tensions. On December 5, former prime minister Imran Khan, currently imprisoned, warned of launching a civil disobedience movement starting December 14 if his demands were not met.

These demands included the release of political prisoners and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate key incidents, including those on May 9 and November 26, 2023.

The government’s committee comprises prominent leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, political aide Rana Sanaullah, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, PPP’s Raja Parvez Ashraf and Naveed Qamar, MQM-P’s Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, and Federal Ministers Aleem Khan, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, and Sardar Khalid Magsi.

On the PTI side, their negotiation team includes Omar Ayub Khan, Ali Amin Gandapur, Salman Akram Raja, Asad Qaiser, Hamid Raza, Hamid Khan, and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

This meeting is viewed as a pivotal moment for addressing political tensions and fostering dialogue to resolve critical national issues.
