Pakistan Elections
WASHINGTON: The United States has called for a comprehensive investigation into election irregularities in Pakistan, emphasizing that such issues must be addressed in accordance with the rule of law.
During a press briefing at the Foreign Press Center, U.S. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that it is crucial for any election irregularities to be thoroughly investigated, resolved, and managed in line with legal standards.
He underscored that this principle applies not only to Pakistan but to every country globally, reinforcing the United States’ commitment to upholding democratic processes and transparency.
Miller’s comments came in response to ongoing concerns over the electoral process in Pakistan, where allegations of irregularities have been raised.
While stressing the importance of resolving such issues within the framework of the law, he affirmed the U.S. position that all countries must ensure fair and transparent elections.
The U.S. continues to advocate for the protection of democratic values worldwide, underscoring the need for governments to address any challenges to electoral integrity.
In addition to discussing Pakistan’s electoral concerns, Miller also responded to accusations made by India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had claimed that the U.S. State Department was orchestrating targeted attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.
The BJP’s allegations, which suggested that the U.S. was actively working to destabilize India, were based on reports from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).
Miller dismissed these accusations as “absurd” and “completely untrue,” asserting that the United States had no such agenda.
He further emphasized that the U.S. remains committed to promoting press freedom and noted that it provides professional development training for journalists globally as part of its ongoing support for freedom of expression.
Miller also addressed the ongoing investigation into allegations of Indian agents’ involvement in a murder plot against a U.S. citizen. He confirmed that the U.S. had raised concerns with the Indian government at senior levels.
The U.S. has emphasized the importance of accountability, and Miller indicated that the Indian government had briefed the U.S. on their commission of inquiry into the matter.
The U.S. continues to prioritize transparency and accountability in addressing these serious concerns, highlighting the need for international cooperation in such investigations.
