Defence Minister Khawaja Asif remarked on Saturday that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has displayed a shift in attitude following the charge sheet issued against former intelligence chief Faiz Hameed. He noted that despite this change, the opposition has yet to initiate a genuine negotiation process.
Asif highlighted that PTI leaders have not made any formal offer for dialogue, stating, “They meet with the National Assembly speaker, enjoy tea and biscuits, and then leave without creating a basis for us to respond to their calls for negotiations.”
Criticizing PTI’s internal conflicts, he said, “Their demands vary—some insist on conditions, others propose unconditional talks. They’ve even formed committees without addressing their internal disputes.” He added that conflicting statements from PTI founder Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and other party officials have created confusion, undermining the party’s unity and focus.
Responding to reports of PTI seeking an NRO, Asif remarked, “There’s a visible shift in their attitude after the charge sheet against General Faiz, but sincerity remains absent. Without sincerity, any negotiation is bound to fail.” He described PTI’s attempts at dialogue as superficial and lacking seriousness.
Khawaja Asif emphasized that the government is open to unconditional negotiations for the betterment of the country and its people. “However, talks cannot be used to fulfill personal agendas. If PTI is willing to negotiate for national welfare and peace, we are ready, but they must first resolve their internal issues,” he stated.
Addressing military court matters, Asif acknowledged limited knowledge of the Supreme Court’s recent decision but hinted that some legal options might still be available under constitutional provisions.
