JUI Sets December 8 Deadline for Government on Madrasah Registration Bill

Madrasah Registration Bill

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has issued a stern ultimatum to the federal government, demanding the passage of the Madrasah Registration Bill by December 8.

This warning comes after the bill was rejected by President Asif Zardari, who sent it back to the government with objections.

To address the situation, a special session of the National Assembly is expected to be convened next week, where lawmakers will deliberate on the bill’s fate.

JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghouri disclosed that the party has been made aware of international pressure against the registration of religious seminaries (madrasahs).

This external pressure, combined with the President’s veto, has intensified the standoff. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, during a meeting with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), expressed his concerns regarding the rejection of the bill.

In a firm stance, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, a prominent JUI-F leader, issued a warning that if the government fails to pass the bill by the deadline, the party will march to Islamabad.

Haideri emphasized that while they preferred a peaceful resolution, they were prepared to escalate matters if necessary. He also referenced previous assurances from Bilawal Bhutto Zardari about the bill’s passage, which have yet to be fulfilled.

Adding to the growing tension, JUI-F leader Hafiz Hamdullah took to social media platform X, condemning the President’s rejection of the bill as a “declaration of war” and a “slap in the face of parliament.”

Hamdullah openly questioned the motives behind the President’s decision, wondering whether it was an attempt to create difficulties for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government.

He also held the President, Prime Minister, and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari responsible for the rejection.

With the deadline of December 8 rapidly approaching, the situation remains fraught with tension. JUI-F has made it clear that they are willing to take drastic action unless the bill is passed, leaving the government in a precarious position. The coming days will be crucial in determining the direction of this standoff.
