Adil Bazai
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified Adil Bazai, a former Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), following a reference sent by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
The decision has led to the declaration of the NA-262 Balochistan seat as vacant, based on the allegations that Bazai’s actions violated the party’s policies and directives.
Adil Bazai had originally joined PML-N after winning the 2018 general elections as an independent candidate. However, his tenure with the party became contentious when he openly defied PML-N’s instructions during the budget session.
In a move that caught both his party leadership and fellow lawmakers by surprise, Bazai made a dramatic shift from the government benches to sit with the opposition in the National Assembly.
This act of rebellion was seen as a direct breach of the party’s stance, which led to a swift response from PML-N’s top leadership.
In reaction to Bazai’s actions, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif took immediate steps to address the breach by sending a reference to the National Assembly Speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, requesting disciplinary action.
Sadiq, in turn, forwarded the matter to the Election Commission, which took up the case and issued a ruling in favor of disqualifying Bazai from his parliamentary seat.
The ECP’s decision underscored that Bazai’s failure to adhere to party lines, particularly his refusal to vote in favor of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, was in violation of the laws that bind parliamentarians to their respective party instructions.
Bazai’s disqualification is a significant setback for his political career. With the Balochistan seat now vacated, a by-election will be required to fill the position.
This ruling not only highlights the importance of party discipline but also signals the ECP’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that elected representatives follow the established protocols of their respective parties.
For Bazai, this marks a crucial moment in his political journey, with his future in the National Assembly now uncertain.
