Fazlur Rehman states he is not in favor of protests during the SCO summit

“We are very close to reaching a consensus on the constitutional amendment,” said Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader, on Monday. He emphasized that he does not support protests during the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

Speaking in Tando Allahyar about the constitutional amendment, he noted, “The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party, and JUI-F have all shared their respective drafts.”

Recently, Rehman urged the opposition to refrain from protests during the SCO event in Pakistan. In a press conference in Islamabad, he remarked, “The parliament’s role in appointing judges will be enhanced with the repeal of the 19th amendment.”

He added, “The government should recognize that our narrative resonates with the public,” and highlighted that the parliament’s influence was diminished by the judicial reforms introduced in the 19th Amendment.

“The consensus can be reached on a suitable draft, but it requires acceptance of our proposal,” Rehman stated, mentioning his plans to meet with Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and later Nawaz Sharif.

He also expressed intentions to engage in discussions with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
