GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and the importance of preventing military escalation along the Lebanese-Israeli border.
He called for measures to protect civilians and urged all parties to exercise restraint in order to avoid engaging in regional conflicts that could exacerbate the situation.
Albudaiwi reiterated the GCC’s commitment to the principles outlined in a recent ministerial statement, stressing the necessity of implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions.
These resolutions call for Israel to respect Lebanese borders and for the Lebanese government to extend its authority and control over its territories, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions and the Taif Agreement.
“This is crucial for Lebanon to fully exercise its sovereignty, ensuring that no weapons operate without the approval of the Lebanese government and that no authority exists beyond its own,” Albudaiwi stated.
He also highlighted the significance of expediting presidential elections and implementing essential economic reforms, enabling the Lebanese government to effectively meet its responsibilities to its citizens.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a regional political and economic organization made up of six Middle Eastern countries: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman. The GCC aims to foster unity and cooperation among its member states, particularly in times of regional instability.
As the situation in Lebanon remains tense, the GCC’s call for a ceasefire and the reinforcement of Lebanon’s sovereignty reflect its commitment to peace and stability in the region.
