Pakistan
Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in the United Nations E-Government Development Index (EGDI) for 2024, marking a notable improvement in its global standing.
The country has advanced 14 positions, moving up from 150th place in the 2022 index to 136th place this year. This progression reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to enhance its digital governance capabilities.
In the latest EGDI survey, Pakistan’s score has risen to 0.5095, up from 0.4238 in 2022 and 0.4183 in 2018. This upward trend indicates a growing sophistication in the country’s e-government services and digital infrastructure.
Despite this progress, Pakistan still trails behind global leaders such as Denmark, which tops the index with a score of 0.9847, and regional leaders like Singapore, with a score of 0.969.
The Maldives, another regional competitor, stands at 0.6745, showcasing a higher level of digital government development.
Within South Asia, Pakistan holds the second-lowest position in the index. India, the regional leader, has a significantly higher EGDI score of 0.6678.
Other South Asian countries also show varying levels of progress: Bangladesh scores 0.6570, Bhutan 0.6511, the Maldives 0.6745, Nepal 0.5781, and Sri Lanka 0.6667. Afghanistan, meanwhile, is at the lower end of the scale with a score of 0.2083.
The United States, United Kingdom, China, and Australia occupy notable positions in the global rankings, with scores reflecting their advanced e-government systems.
The US is ranked 19th with an EGDI score of 0.7510, the UK holds the 7th spot with 0.8460, China is in 35th place with 0.5300, and Australia ranks 8th with a score of 0.8430.
Pakistan’s rise in the EGDI underscores its efforts to improve its digital governance and public service delivery.
While there remains a gap between Pakistan and the top-ranked countries, this progress is a testament to the country’s commitment to advancing its e-government capabilities and digital infrastructure.
