Speaker Designates Parliament Lodges as Sub-Jail

Parliament Lodges

Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, has officially designated the Parliament Lodges as a sub-jail for members of the National Assembly (MNAs) from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party who are currently detained.

This decision comes in response to the recent arrest of several PTI MNAs, who will be confined to their respective lodges within the Parliament complex.

The announcement marks a significant move by the National Assembly to address the situation involving detained legislators.

Under this arrangement, the Parliament Lodges, which are typically used for accommodation of MNAs, will now serve as a temporary detention facility.

This measure allows for the detained MNAs to remain within the parliamentary premises, thereby facilitating their appearances in court while also ensuring that they are under custody.

The National Assembly Secretariat has taken steps to formalize this arrangement by issuing instructions to the relevant police authorities. These instructions outline the procedures and security measures needed to manage the lodges as a sub-jail.

The arrangement ensures that the detained MNAs are secured while still being able to participate in the legal processes that require their presence.

This practice of designating the lodges as sub-jails is not unprecedented. It follows a tradition where the lodges of detained MNAs are used as temporary detention facilities when production orders are issued for their appearance in court.

Such measures are implemented to maintain the dignity and functionality of the parliamentary institution while addressing legal and security concerns related to the detention of its members.

By converting the Parliament Lodges into a sub-jail, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq is adhering to established protocols for handling situations involving detained legislators.

This decision reflects a commitment to ensuring that the parliamentary process remains orderly and that detained MNAs are managed in a manner consistent with legal and institutional norms.
