Pakistan’s cricketing landscape is set to witness an exciting new chapter with the introduction of the Champions One-Day Cup, which will commence on September 12 (Thursday) at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
This tournament marks a significant addition to the domestic circuit, coming on the heels of a challenging period for the national team.
Following a disappointing performance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and struggles against Bangladesh in the red-ball format on home soil, the Champions One-Day Cup aims to rejuvenate the domestic cricket scene and provide a fresh platform for emerging and established talent.
The Champions One-Day Cup will feature a total of 14 matches, with five competitive teams vying for the prestigious trophy. Each team is set to bring its unique flair and strategy to the tournament, making for an anticipated showcase of passion and skill.
The tournament will see prominent players taking on leadership roles, with Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter, Babar Azam, a top-order batter, and Shaheen Shah Afridi, a fast bowler, all preparing to make a significant impact.
Rizwan will captain the Wolves, while Afridi will lead the Lions, with both players bringing their extensive experience and leadership qualities to their respective teams.
In addition to these captains, the tournament will feature teams mentored by some of Pakistan cricket’s legends. Shadab Khan will captain the Panthers, supported by the guidance of legendary off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq.
The Lions will benefit from the mentorship of Waqar Younis, with Shaheen Shah Afridi leading them on the field. Mohammad Haris will lead the Stallions, and the experienced all-rounder Shoaib Malik will serve as their mentor.
Rizwan’s Wolves will also have the strategic oversight of former Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq. Finally, the Dolphins will be guided by Sarfraz Ahmed, with Saud Shakeel taking on the captaincy role for the team.
