Top Army Officials Stress Urgent Need for Enhanced Cybersecurity Measures

On Tuesday, military leaders emphasized the urgent need for stringent cybersecurity measures to protect national cyberspace. This point was highlighted during the Corps Commanders’ Conference at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, chaired by Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir.

The statement comes in the wake of the government’s recent decision to implement a web monitoring system (WMS) to manage online content, a move confirmed by the Cabinet Division last month. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has since blocked 2,369 URLs and 183 mobile apps through this system.

However, software houses and IT companies have reported connectivity issues, with internet speeds slowing by up to 40% since July. Problems have also affected WhatsApp, impacting documents, images, and voice notes for millions of users.

According to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release, the conference expressed satisfaction with ongoing efforts to combat illegal spectrum operations linked to terrorist networks.

The military leadership underscored the Army’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and loyalty, emphasizing a rigorous system of accountability with no room for exceptions or partiality. This strict adherence to accountability helps maintain the Army’s integrity and ensures that no individual is above the law.

COAS Munir reaffirmed the Army’s support for the government, law enforcement, and administrative bodies in taking swift legal action against terrorists, anarchists, and criminal groups. He emphasized that the Army is determined to preserve its achievements against terrorism.

The conference reviewed the current geo-strategic environment, national security challenges, and responses to emerging threats. In particular, it addressed the situation in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where recent terrorist attacks have caused significant casualties and damage. The Balochistan Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for these attacks, which included targeting police stations, railway tracks, and vehicles.

The military leaders reiterated their commitment to preventing any reversal of progress against terrorism, acknowledging the sacrifices of armed forces personnel, law enforcement officers, and civilians in the pursuit of peace.

In addition, the forum expressed solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, condemned the ongoing violence against Palestinians by Israel, and reaffirmed the Pakistan Army’s operational readiness and commitment to professional excellence.
