Landslide in Gilgit-Baltistan Damages Dozens of Houses

Landslide in Gilgit-Baltistan

Multiple landslides in Ghizer district, located in Gilgit-Baltistan, have caused extensive damage, affecting dozens of homes and disrupting key transportation routes.

The landslides, triggered by heavy rains and flash floods, have led to the closure of the Karakorum Highway at three critical points.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Ghizer, the village of Yangal in Gupis has been particularly hard-hit.

The massive landslide there has resulted in the complete destruction of 15 houses and partial damage to 59 others.

Additionally, 45 cattle sheds were entirely destroyed, while 20 others sustained partial damage.

The impact of the landslide extends beyond residential structures, with significant losses to livestock infrastructure.

In the surrounding areas of Ishkoman, Haim, and Yasin, 11 homes have been damaged by landslides.

The administration reported similar damage to cattle sheds in these regions. The heavy rains and subsequent flash floods have further exacerbated the situation by destroying standing crops and uprooting trees, compounding the difficulties faced by local residents.

While roads in the regions of Gilgit, Ghizer, and Shandoor, which were previously affected by the adverse weather conditions, have been reopened to traffic, the Karakorum Highway remains closed at three locations due to the landslides.

These closures are particularly problematic as they cut off land access to several upper areas, impeding transportation and relief efforts.

The ongoing situation underscores the severe impact of natural disasters on infrastructure and livelihoods in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The combination of landslides, heavy rains, and strong winds has resulted in widespread disruption and damage, requiring concerted efforts for recovery and rehabilitation.

The authorities are working to address the immediate needs of the affected communities and to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
