Resolution on Kashmir Receives Overwhelming Support, One Lawmaker Disagrees

Resolution on Kashmir

ISLAMABAD: On Tuesday, the National Assembly passed a resolution strongly opposing India’s unilateral revocation of the special status of held-Kashmir.

This resolution, known as the Youm-i-Istehsaal-i-Kashmir Day Resolution, garnered widespread approval from lawmakers, though it faced dissent from a single member.

The resolution, introduced by Safron and Kashmir Affairs Minister Amir Muqam, called for several significant actions concerning Kashmir.

It urged India to release Kashmiri political prisoners, halt ongoing human rights violations, and provide essential humanitarian aid.

Additionally, the resolution demanded the sincere implementation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, advocating for a fair and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices to allow the Kashmiri people to determine their future democratically.

The National Assembly reaffirmed its moral, political, and diplomatic support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, honoring their courage and resilience in their struggle.

Following the resolution’s passage, PkMAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai raised a point of order expressing his opposition.

He stated that his dissent stemmed from being unable to propose amendments to the draft resolution. In a pointed speech, parts of which were censored during the live broadcast of the session, Achakzai criticized the approach of the resolution.

He argued that the people of Kashmir should have the opportunity to decide which country they wish to join, suggesting that if they chose Pakistan voluntarily, they would be welcomed.

Achakzai also criticized the Speaker of the National Assembly, accusing him of stifling debate by not allowing him to speak on the resolution.

The Speaker responded, expressing pride in being termed a “havaldar,” a term used for frontline defenders of the country, and assured that Achakzai’s opposition was duly noted.

In reaction to Achakzai’s comments, PPP MNA Shazia Marri expressed regret over his opposition to the resolution.

Meanwhile, PTI members Ali Muhammad Khan and Barrister Gohar Ali Khan clarified that their party had supported the resolution, reinforcing their stance on the Kashmir issue.
