Pakistan and Iran discuss regional developments after Haniyeh’s death

The foreign ministers of Pakistan and Iran held a phone call to address the regional implications following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

The conversation was initiated by Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri, who conveyed the Iranian government’s profound condolences over Haniyeh’s death.

During the call, Pakistani Foreign Minister Dar shared the Pakistani people’s grief and informed that the Prime Minister had strongly condemned the murder of Haniyeh. He noted that the National Assembly of Pakistan had also unanimously denounced the act.

Dar assured Bagheri of Pakistan’s support for convening an extraordinary meeting of the OIC Foreign Ministers, affirming that Pakistan would participate in the meeting.

Haniyeh, head of Hamas’s political wing, was killed in an alleged Israeli missile strike in Tehran two days ago while he was asleep, resulting in the death of his bodyguard as well.

Hamas confirmed Haniyeh’s death, denouncing the attack as cowardly and vowing retaliation. Iran has pledged to seek revenge, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cautioned that the coming months may be difficult for Israel.

According to the New York Times, explosives used in the assassination were concealed in Haniyeh’s restroom two months earlier, indicating a premeditated plan.

The call between the foreign ministers underscores the rising tensions and the need for continued regional dialogue and cooperation in response to such incidents.
