Woman Commits Suicide After Receiving Inflated Electricity Bill In Punjab

Inflated Electricity Bill

GUJRANWALA: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 65-year-old woman named Razia Bibi took her own life after being forced to use her medical savings to pay an unexpectedly high electricity bill.

Razia Bibi, who had been suffering from a hernia, had diligently set aside funds for a necessary surgical procedure.

However, the arrival of an inflated electricity bill for Rs 10,000 presented an unmanageable financial burden.

According to reports, Razia Bibi was compelled to deplete her savings meant for her hernia operation in order to cover the electricity charges.

This unexpected financial strain caused her significant distress. The tragedy unfolded when Razia Bibi, overwhelmed by despair, decided to take her life.

Her son, Usman, relayed to the police that his mother had gone out to buy medicine but was deeply upset by the financial setback she faced. In a moment of profound hopelessness, she jumped into a nearby drain.

Usman explained, “My mother was a hernia patient and had saved money for her operation.

However, upon receiving the Rs 10,000 electricity bill, she had to use the funds set aside for her surgery to pay the bill.

This financial strain led to her tragic decision to end her life.” Despite the efforts of Razia Bibi’s daughter to rescue her mother from the drain, they were unsuccessful. The local authorities are currently conducting a search operation to recover her body.

Footage of the incident has surfaced, capturing the distressing moments leading up to the tragedy.

In response, the Gujranwala Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Razia Bibi’s death.

This tragic event underscores the severe impact of financial hardships on individuals and the urgent need for addressing issues related to inflated utility bills and financial support for those in need.
