PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Apex Committee, led by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, has resolved to approach the judiciary for an inquiry into the Bannu incident. Following a recent meeting, the provincial government also announced plans to conduct its own investigation to identify those responsible for the incident.
The statement released after the meeting emphasized that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, it must be conducted in accordance with the law and established code of conduct. The committee stressed the importance of adhering to legal norms during protests to ensure order and public safety.
The military leadership, present at the meeting, clarified that no military operations are currently underway in the province. “Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur directed the police to arrest and take action against any armed non-state actors,” the statement noted. The military’s role, as stated, would be limited to assisting in border areas if necessary, with the police and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) handling internal security matters.
The statement also addressed the impact of unfair criticism on government institutions, noting that the morale of officers and troops has been affected by such criticisms. It highlighted the collective efforts of Pakistan’s army, police, and other defense agencies in combating terrorism.
In addition, the Apex Committee decided to request the federal government to allow trade through traditional border crossings, including Torkham, Kharlachi, Angoor Ada, Ghulam Khan, Bajaur, and Mohmand. The resumption of trade at these crossings is expected to generate employment for local residents and reduce smuggling.
The meeting, which included military, police, and civil officials, reaffirmed the commitment to action against armed groups and the importance of maintaining law and order in the region.
