ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has called on the interim Afghan government to take “immediate and effective action” against those responsible for the recent terrorist attack on the Bannu Cantonment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In a statement released on Wednesday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office expressed serious concerns over the continued presence of terror outfits in Afghanistan that pose a threat to Pakistan’s security.
The attack, which occurred on Monday, involved militants ramming an explosives-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall of the military base. The assault resulted in the martyrdom of eight security force members. However, the security forces managed to repel the attack, killing at least 10 terrorists in the process. The Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group, operating out of neighboring Afghanistan, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) highlighted that the concerns regarding the use of Afghan soil by terrorists had been communicated to the interim Afghan government. Pakistan urged Afghan authorities to take concrete actions to prevent such elements from operating within their territory.
Following the attack, Pakistan summoned the Taliban’s deputy head of mission and issued a “strong demarche” over the incident. The Foreign Office’s statement underscored that the Bannu attack serves as a stark reminder of the severe threat posed by terrorism to regional peace and security. It called for a thorough investigation by the Taliban authorities and demanded robust and effective measures to prevent future attacks.
The recent escalation in terrorist activities has put a strain on Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, with Pakistan insisting on decisive action to ensure that Afghan soil is not used as a launchpad for terrorist operations against its territory.
