Govt Announces Ban on PTI; Article 6 Proceedings Against Key Leaders

ISLAMABAD: In a decisive move, Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar announced on Monday that the government has decided to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), citing the party’s involvement in anti-state activities. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Tarar stated that the government holds the authority to ban any political party under Article 17 of the Constitution if it is found to be involved in activities against the state.

“PTI and Pakistan cannot go forward together,” Tarar declared, emphasizing the gravity of the decision. He highlighted that a reference will be filed against the PTI in the Supreme Court under Article 6, which pertains to high treason and is invoked for the most severe constitutional offenses.

Tarar cited multiple instances as evidence of PTI’s alleged anti-state activities, including the foreign funding case and the May 9 riots. These incidents, according to Tarar, provide substantial grounds for the government’s actions against the party.

In addition to the ban, the government has also decided to file a review petition in the reserved seats case. The minister explained that this decision was made in consultation with the government’s allies, reflecting a unified stance on the issue. Tarar criticized the previous ruling, stating that the PTI received “unasked for” relief in the reserved seats case, despite not being a party in the matter.

The announcement marks a significant escalation in Pakistan’s political conflict, with major implications for the PTI and its leadership. As the government moves forward with these legal actions, the political landscape is expected to undergo significant shifts, potentially leading to heated debates and further polarization.

The government’s firm stance underscores its commitment to upholding constitutional norms and national security, setting the stage for a contentious period in Pakistan’s political arena.
