New Study Estimates Gaza Death Toll Could Exceed 186,000

Gaza Death Toll

A study published in the medical journal Lancet has brought attention to the devastating toll of Israel’s recent war on Gaza, estimating that the death toll could exceed 186,000 people. This figure represents nearly 8% of Gaza’s population before the conflict, which stood at 2.3 million.

Since the Israeli military assault began in October, Gaza’s Health Ministry reported over 38,000 Palestinians killed.

However, the Lancet study suggests that this number may be significantly underestimated due to severe damage to health facilities, food distribution networks, and other critical infrastructure essential for accurate reporting.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been exacerbated by substantial funding cuts to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

Additionally, UN data indicates that as of February, an estimated 10,000 bodies were buried under rubble, with 35% of Gaza’s buildings destroyed.

The Lancet study underscores that in conflicts like these, indirect deaths—resulting from factors such as lack of access to healthcare, clean water, and food—can far exceed direct casualties.

It cites historical data suggesting that indirect deaths can range from 3 to 15 times the number of direct deaths. Using a conservative estimate of 4 indirect deaths for every direct death, the study posits that the actual death toll could potentially reach or exceed 186,000 people.

Addressing allegations of data fabrication by Gaza’s Health Ministry, the study rebuts such claims, citing assessments from Israeli intelligence, the UN, and the World Health Organization, all of which find them implausible.

Beyond the immediate humanitarian implications, the Lancet study stresses the importance of documenting the true extent of the crisis for historical accountability and fulfilling legal responsibilities regarding the consequences of war.

It highlights the need for comprehensive international efforts to address the ongoing crisis in Gaza and support efforts towards peace and stability in the region.
